Douglas Young, 90, died on June 29, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He was born in Franklin County, North Carolina on December 15, 1922, to Augusta L. "Cherry" Young and Clydia Wheeler Young and lived most of his life in Asheboro, NC.
He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Batchelor and husband John Mark Batchelor of King, NC, and Paula Chamblee of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; his grandson Jordan Douglas Johnson, of Raleigh, NC, and sister Gaynelle Allen of Louisburg, NC. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Laurene Chamblee Young; granddaughter Sunny Dare Johnson; brothers J.D. Young, Albright Young, Claude Young; and sisters Dorothy Reiter, Flonnie Eddins, and Colleen Young.
He served in the Army in World War II in northern Africa and Italy, was injured in 1944 in Italy and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After the War he earned Bachelors and Masters degree's from NCSU. He worked most of his life as an Agricultural Extension Agent in Randolph County and received a national award in Boise, ID for his work. He was a member of Asheboro United Church of Christ.
A graveside service will be held in Asheboro, NC at Oaklawn Cemetery on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dr. John Mark Batchelor officiating. Military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
