Dorothy Gordon Hinshaw Small, age 94, of US Hwy. 220 business North, Randleman died Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
Mrs. Small was better known as Dot, Mama, Memaw, Granny and Aunt Dot-Dot. She was born September 9, 1923 in Whitsett, NC, to the late Adam and Lou Olive Gordon Hinshaw. Dot was raised in Whitsett and graduated from Gibsonville High School. She married Fred Small in 1943 and moved to Randolph County. She has been a member of Level Cross Methodist Church since 1953, where she served as Sunday School teacher and Youth Leader and on various committees. After working in the hosiery and textile industry for nearly 30 years, Dot returned to school at the age of 49. She graduated from the Registered Nurse program at GTCC in 1974. Dot worked as a Registered Nurse at Randolph Hospital for 13 years and as a Family Liaison in Surgical Services for 6 years.
Dot had a remarkable talent for sewing and for needlework. She did embroidery, crewel work and cross stitch. She loved raising flowers and gardening , collecting bird figurines, feeding the birds. As long as Dot could see to read, she was an avid reader and until her death was a faithful patron of Talking Books. Dot had a special love for her family. She cherished the annual family beach trips and started the tradition of nightly Dominoes games.
In addition to her parents, Dot is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Small; sisters, Emily Gray of Randleman, Ruth Spence of Archdale, Edith Bescher of Asbury, MO, Cathey Greeson of Whitsett; brother, Buryl Hinshaw of Graham.
Dot is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Gerald Coble of Asheboro; grandchildren: Amy LaLonde and husband Jake of Ashland, KY., Jeffery Coble of Raleigh, Lisa Fowler and husband Matt of Lexington; great grandchildren: Tanner LaLonde of New Orleans, LA., and Cody and Adam Fowler of Lexington; sister-in-law, Millie Cooper of Randleman; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Level Cross United Methodist Church with Pastor Karen Angel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 4:30 pm in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home of Carol and Gerald Coble. A graveside service will be held Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 am at Randolph Memorial Park.
