Donnie Shurman Hammer

Donnie Shurman Hammer, age 61, of 535 Brookwood Dr., Asheboro died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edward J. Arroyo officiating. Entombment will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Mr. Hammer was a native of Asheboro and a graduate of Asheboro High School. He was employed with Acme-McCrary Corporation Maintenance Department for 40 years and was a charter member of Central Carolina Community Church (C4), where he was a head usher. He was preceded in death by his father, Diffie Hammer. Donnie was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a craftsman and skilled woodworker. He is survived by his wife, Cerelda Hughes Hammer; daughter, Suzanne Cox Smith and her husband Jonathon E. Smith of Franklinton, NC; his grandson, Grady Smith, who was the apple of his eye; mother, Irene Shaw Hammer of Asheboro, NC; and sister, Julia Hockett of Arlington, VA. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC.
