Dewey Caviness, 87, of Asheboro passed away on Friday, March 3, 2017 after a long illness.
Mr. Caviness was born in Pinehurst, NC on June 21, 1929 to Dewey and Ethel Horner Caviness. In addition to his parents, Dewey was preceded in death by his sister Maxine. His NC State studies were interrupted by a draft summons during the Korean Conflict. The next four years were spent in the U.S. Air Force with Radio Communications on fighter jets. His guard was involved in Operation Castle, the testing of atom bombs in the South Pacific. Having returned to North Carolina he continued his studies and in 1958 he graduated from NC State with a degree in engineering. Upon his return to Asheboro, Dewey played softball for the American Legion and volleyball for First Baptist Church. He worked early stages at the NC Zoo with Alvis George and Hyatt Hammond. Dewey worked at Asheboro Plumbing & Heating until its closing.
He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, was a former Sunday School teacher, and was involved in many committees. Dewey was a former member of the NC Jaycees, the Asheboro Lions Club and Lions International, American Legion Post 45, the NC Zoo, and was an NC State Alumni.
Dewey had a strong faith in God and always put family first. He was quiet, mild mannered, and loved to water ski.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Lou Shaw Caviness; daughter, Karen Denise Caviness; sister, Shirley Caviness McCrary and husband Walter; nieces, Rita Brown and her children, Dylan, Vanessa; and Lori Hill and her children Emily And Alyssa; and nephew, W.G. McCrary and his daughter Chloe.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 5, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery, 737 Albemarle Road, Asheboro with Dr. Scotty Carpenter officiating and with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
