On Friday, August 24, 2018, David Spencer Whitaker, 63, of Asheboro passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
David was the son of the late Wiley Martin and Mildred Vick Whitaker. David was a 1973 graduate of Asheboro High School and a 1976 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Immediately after graduation, he started working for Bess Maid, which was family owned and it was a janitorial supplies and services company. As VP of Sales, David worked at Best Maid till 1984. David then began work for Whit Corp, as VP of Sales and Marketing, with his parents and brother, till 2006 when Whit Corp was sold. David's expert skills in sales and marketing drove him to start his own business, Personalized Products & Promotions, which he continued to run throughout sickness and health to present day.
David served as a member for several local organizations including: Asheboro Planning & Zoning; Asheboro Chamber of Commerce, and running for the City Council for the betterment of Asheboro twice.
David's bucket list for many years was to be on the Wheel of Fortune. This became reality when the Wheel of Fortune came to Greensboro in 1998 for try-outs. David was called back and was on The Wheel of Fortune, with Pat and Vanna May 19,1999 winning; having Pat ask him if he needed to pull up a chair with his "sales pitch" of an introduction.
David was an avid fisherman, having a love of the ocean since a child, fishing at Hatteras every chance he had, whether offshore on his boat or surf fishing, riding the Outer Banks shore scanning the beach for birds looking for that blue blitz...
David is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 21 years, Barbara Holloway Whitaker; daughter, Laura Linder and husband David; son, Scott Spencer Whitaker; granddaughters, Katie and Roxanne Linder; grandson; Eli Shiflet; sister, Jean Wilkinson and her husband, Walter of Charlotte; and brother, Mike Whitaker and his wife Penny of Wilmington.
The family would like to thank Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC, for all their love, support and emotional care in 2018.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 27, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro, NC and other times at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at the Pugh Funeral Home chapel.
