David Auman Hughes of 1009 Cliff Rd, Asheboro, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2016 following a short battle with cancer. His service will be held at Central United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00am officiated by Dr. J. Franklin Howard. Burial will follow at Asheboro City Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive visitors at Pugh Funeral Home on Tuesday October 4th from 6 until 8 pm, and during other times at the family residence.
David was born to Clarence Edwin Hughes, Jr. and wife Kathleen Bell Hughes on May 6, 1935. He was educated in the Asheboro City Schools and High Point College. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Parrish in 1955. The couple would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on October 12th.
David was predeceased by his parents; daughter, Teresa Hughes Hamilton; and son, David Auman Hughes, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Hughes of the home; his daughter Jane Hughes Redding and her husband Scott; son-in-law Butch Hamilton of Sunset Beach, NC; grandsons, Christopher Watson and his wife, Emily, of Nashville, NC and Andrew Hughes of Asheboro, and granddaughter, Cynthia Redding of Asheboro; 3 great grandsons; sister, Patricia H. Skeen of Asheboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
David was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church, serving in several capacities including Sunday School teacher and Lay speaker. He spent each Sunday as an Usher for families and friends seated in the church balcony, which he referred to as his "spending time with his attic people." David was involved as a leader with the Community Bible Study program as well as a member of the Gideons. He was a former Jaycee, acting as President. He was retired after spending forty-five years as a sales engineer in commercial dry cleaning and laundry equipment, most recently with Wade Johnson Corporation in Greensboro. David enjoyed spending time in his workshop and growing vegetables in the garden. He was filled with love for other people and the Lord; his talent was making sure that everyone he met felt special and important.
