Charlie Barnes Casper, 86, husband of the late Evelyn Dorton Casper, died on June 5, 2015. He was a resident of Pavilion Health Center, Charlotte, NC.
Mr. Casper was born in New London, NC, February 13, 1929, the son of the late Charlie and Ethel Casper, and he resided during his life in New London, Albemarle, Asheboro, and Charlotte, NC, and in Cherry Grove, SC. Mr. Casper graduated magna cum laude from Wake Forest College in 1952, when he joined the United States Air Force, serving in Korea. He returned to continue his education at Wake Forest School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1958. Mr. Casper taught at Pfeiffer College during 1958-60.
On August 22, 1953, he married Mrs. Casper at the First Baptist Church of Kannapolis. The couple lived in Albemarle from 1955-1960, and then they moved to Asheboro, where Mr. Archie L. Smith, Sr. had recruited Mr. Casper to join his law firm. The firm would later become known as Smith, Casper, Smith and Alexander. Mr. Casper also served as City Attorney for the city of Asheboro for nearly three decades. He retired from the practice of law in 1995.
A long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro, Mr. Casper served as a Deacon and an Elder. Mr. and Mrs. Casper treasured their time as members of the Westminster Class, to whom Mr. Casper taught on many Sundays. Mr. Casper served on the Board of Directors of Inlet Point in Cherry Grove, SC. He is also past president of the Asheboro Country Club and past president of the Asheboro Chamber of Commerce.
During his abundant life, Mr. Casper's dedication was to Mrs. Casper, to his family, and to his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mr. Casper is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Carol Casper Figuers and husband Robert Bledsoe Figuers of Cary, and Dr. Susan Casper Shaffner and husband James de Schweinitz Shaffner of Charlotte; by his four grandchildren, Suzanne Elizabeth Figuers of New York City, Cameron Casper Figuers of Cary, and Caroline Ayars Shaffner and Charles Richard Shaffner of Charlotte; by his brother-in-law, Dr. M. Lamar Dorton and wife Bettie Sides Dorton of Statesville; by his two nieces, Diana Dorton Schnebelt of Statesville, and Sarah Dorton Cozart of Raleigh; and by four grandnephews.
A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Wednesday, June 10 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 420 West Walker Avenue, Asheboro, NC 27203, with the family receiving friends at the Church immediately following. The family respectfully requests, in lieu of flowers, that memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro, or to any charity.
