Charles Ray "Charkie" Varner, age 61, of 446 McCollum Street, Randleman died Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston- Salem.Mr. Varner was a native of Randolph County and graduated from Randleman High School, class of 1966 where he played baseball. In 1963 the baseball team with which he played, competed in the Pony League World Series. Charkie was an avid UNC Tarheel fan, "Go Heels". He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Era and was an artist and loved to draw. Charkie was retired from Klaussner Furniture and is preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Rosa Varner. He is survived by brothers: Lloyd Varner of Asheboro, NC, and Larry Varner and his wife, Maggie of Topeka, KS. nieces and nephews; Tina Varner of Asheboro, Jim Varner, Gregg Varner and Laura Shafer all of Topeka, KS. and Mary Clark of Randleman, NC; 9 great nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends Friday, October 9, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 600 South Main Street, Randleman, NC and other times at the home of his niece: Mary Clark, 670 Old Castle Drive, Randleman. The funeral will be held Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Randleman with Rev. Keith Auman officiating.Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Museum, North Randolph Historical Society, P.O.
