Charles (Rusty) Hartsell age 87 passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024 at Hospice House of Randolph County. Funeral services will be at First Methodist Church at 224 North Fayetteville Street on March 10, 2024 with the Rev Lynda Ferguson, Rev Don Haynes, Rev Gary Mason officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00-2:45 pm in the church parlor, then move to the sanctuary and service will begin at 3:00 pm.
Rusty was born in Newport, Tennessee to Charles Franklin Hartsell and Evelyn Fortenberry. He graduated from Cocke County High School as President of his Senior class and attended Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee.
He and his family moved to Asheboro, NC in 1966. He was very active in First Methodist Church serving on many committees. He was a junior/senior counselor at First Methodist Church for over ten years, taught Sunday school for thirty years and was a member of Stephen Ministries. Rusty volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Jeremiah Project and Randolph Hospital for over twelve years and was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award for his many hours of service at the Randolph Hospital. In earlier years he coached baseball, basketball, and football for Asheboro City League. He served on the Asheboro City school board for four years and on the Board of CUOC for two years.
Rusty worked at Georgia Pacific until his retirement in 2000. Rusty loved playing golf with his friends, volleyball at the YMCA and white-water rafting. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents Rusty was preceded in death by his son Charles William “Rusty” Hartsell, sister-in-law Billy Sue, Johnny and infant son Robert John Webb, brother-in-law Clay Webb.
Survivors include his wife Frieda Hartsell, son Mark Hartsell with wife Teresa, daughter in law Angie Hartsell, grandchildren Coty Hartsell, Amanda Miljenovic (Jared), Marcus Hartsell (Catherine), Tucker Hartsell, Meredith Hartsell, Mason Hartsell (Hope), Mariah Hartsell fiancée (Corey Hogan), three great grandchildren Maria Ramirez-Tellez, Reid Hartsell, Jersey Miljenovic.
A sister-in-law Sandy Webb of Newport Tennessee. A brother Lloyd Hartsell (Bea) from San Jose California and his cherished nieces and nephews Bart Webb, Grant Webb (Tina), Belinda Woodall (Todd), Nicholas Webb. Great nieces and nephews Jake Webb (Jessi), Addison Webb, Madelyn Webb, Ella Webb, Lauren Woodall, Lacey Woodall, Landree Woodall.
Memorials may be made in memory of Rusty Hartsell to Hospice House of Randolph County and to Randolph County SPCA.
