Charles Albert Newsom, age 79, of Troy, NC, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Hospice Haven, Rockingham, NC.
Mr. Newsom was born in High Point, NC, the son of Albert Hearst Newsom and Elon Green Newsom.
Charles was active in the Boy Scouts and was a proud Eagle Scout. He served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam era. He studied Business Administration at Kings College in Charlotte, NC and earned his certificate in Horology (watchmaking) at Bradley University in Illinois. He partnered with his father and eventually became the sole owner of Newsom's Jewelers in Troy, NC until he retired in 1999. He was a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society and a licensed NC Real Estate Broker. He was a member of the Montgomery County Jaycees, Troy Lion's Club, and very active in Rotary International and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Montgomery County Board of Education. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Troy, NC and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Charles enjoyed life, the company of others and often filled a room with laughter. He loved the beach and cruising around in his golf cart with his UNC flag. He enjoyed listening and dancing to beach music. He would never miss an opportunity to eat at K&W.
He is survived by former spouse and friend: Peggy Newsom of Troy, NC; three daughters: Tracy Garner (Max) of Troy, NC, Charlotte Nunez-Wolff (Miguel) of Chapel Hill, NC and Dana Nelson (Robert) of Troy, NC; grandchildren: Hannah Butler, Sarah Butler, Christian Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Faith Nelson, Owen Garner, and Joseph Garner; sister: Carol Ann Thrower Boynton Beach, FL; nephew: Jay Thrower; niece: Venetia Thrower Crook; and grand-dogs: Anya, Vada, and Maisy.
A family Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 11:30 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 239 N. Russell St., Troy, NC. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Vanlene Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Clear Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4321 S. Main St. Ext., Denton, NC.
