Local Industrialist Dies
Charles Walker McCrary, Jr. passed away Wednesday, July 13th, 2016 at his home in Asheboro, NC with his loving family by his side. He was born May 15, 1934 in Randolph County.
He is the son of the late Charles Walker McCrary and Julia English McCrary.
Charles graduated from Asheboro High School and attended Davidson College majoring in English. He served in the United States Army, and was stationed in the Panama Canal, 1956-1958. He retired third generation President and CEO of Acme-McCrary Corporation and Chairman of the Board Sapona Manufacturing. He also served many years as a Director and Officer of Randolph Oil Company, Director of Randolph Hospital, and Wells Fargo Bank and Trust, and a Director and Officer of Acme-McCrary & Sapona Foundation.
Charles was a life long member of First United Methodist Church and an avid hunter and fisherman. Most weekends one could find him piddling on his boat at Badin Lake. He was a HAM radio operator and self proclaimed electronics guru. Charles never knew a stranger and was a generous friend and mentor to all.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth McCrary Simmons.
Charles is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Susan Noble McCrary; daughter Suzanne English McCrary; son Charles Walker McCrary, III and his wife Shannon, and grandchildren Samantha Grace McCrary and Charles Walker McCrary, IV; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 17th, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC 27203. The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 18th, at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro NC 27203 with his pastors Rev. Lynda Ferguson and Dr. Donald Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at the City Cemetery. Military honors provided by Randolph County Honor Guard.
