~Carol Hardy Kornegay, 70, of Randleman, NC, left this earth to meet Jesus on May 2, 2017. She was surrounded by her family and friends in her final hours at Hospice of Randolph County. She was born in Lebanon, TN, to Margaret Padgett and S. Leon Hardy on March 3, 1947. The family moved to Clearwater, FL, when Carol was a little girl, and she attended Clearwater High School and St. Petersburg Junior College. Her family attended Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, and they were there almost every time the church doors were open. As an adult, she was a longtime, active member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Pembroke Pines, FL. She met the love of her life, Bill Kornegay, during her first week at Florida State University, and the two married shortly after graduating, on Aug. 2, 1969, and moved to Pembroke Pines, FL. Carol was an elementary school teacher and taught for 30 years in Dade County Schools, the vast majority at North Twin Lakes Elementary. She would go on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Miami, all while pregnant with her first child and moonlighting as a test proctor. More than anything else in her life, Carol’s pride and joy were her four children and 10 grandchildren. In her retirement, she cared for her granddaughters Ashley and Allyson. During the full year she cared for each of them, they never napped in the crib as she insisted on holding them while they slept. Carol had a love of reading that she passed on to her children, and would stay up to the wee hours reading the latest Mary Higgins Clark, Robin Cook or Stephen King novel. She also enjoyed playing Scrabble, whether against a family member or on her iPad against the computer, and would bring her game board when she travelled, even when camping. Throughout her life she also loved to travel, especially to mountains. Carol had fond memories of packing up all four kids and a pop-up camper and driving out west to explore the Rocky Mountains and Canada. She and Bill also took a two-week trip to Alaska that both talked about for decades afterward. Carol is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bill Kornegay; her children Christie Holt (John), Kimberly Chin (Stephen), Keith Kornegay and Kiley Mallard (Blake); her grandchildren, Ashley (16), Chloe (15), Ian (13), Jacob (10), Zachary (10), Evelyn (8), Allyson (6), Darcy (6), Abigail (5) and Alex (3); and her sister, Chloe Anne Rohr (Hans), niece Jennifer Copeland (Ted), and nephews Rob Rohr and Christopher Hardy. She was predeceased by her parents, and brother, Samuel Hardy. Her memorial service will be held at Pugh Funeral Home in Randleman, NC. Her children and husband will greet visitors on Thursday, May 4, from 6-7 p.m. with a celebration of her life to follow. Rev. Nathan Snider will preside at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Faith Presbyterian Church of Pembroke Pines, FL, The Salvation Army, and Hospice of Randolph County, NC.
