Carl F. Phillips, of 700 Worth Street, Asheboro, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.
Carl was the son of Fred and Pearl Kivett Phillips and a true native son of the city of Asheboro, being the first baby born in the Asheboro Memorial Hospital on March 21, 1920. It was a fifteen bed facility and the only hospital in operation in the city at that time. It was located in the old Fisher mansion on Sunset Avenue.
Carl grew up in Asheboro, graduating from Asheboro High School and attending UNC CH. With the exception of one year when he was the office manager of Newton Rayon Mills located in Newton, NC and three and a half years during World War II, Carl was a lifelong resident of Asheboro.
During World War II Carl was assigned to the Sixth Armored Division which served as one of the armored spearheads in General George S. Patton Jr.'s Third Army during five campaigns in Northern and Central Europe. In addition to the EAMET ribbon with five campaign stars he was awarded the Bronze Star by the United States, the Croix de Guerre avec Etoile de Bronze by France and the La Croix de Guerre 1940 avec Palme by Belgium.
After military service Carl entered the accounting profession and was a practitioner for fifty-seven years (nineteen years as an individual practitioner and thirty-eight years with other accounting firms).
Carl was a fifty-six year perfect attendance member, a Paul Harris Fellow and a past president of the Asheboro Rotary Club; a member and past commander of Post 1159 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.; a member of American Legion Post 45 and a member for over seventy years of First United Methodist Church of Asheboro.
Carl is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Helen Brown Phillips; his son Bob and wife Judy Bowman Phillips of Asheboro; son John and wife Debbie Mann Phillips of Cary, NC; granddaughter Erin Phillips of Cary, NC; grandson Ben Phillips of Redondo Beach, California; brother, Dr. Marvin Phillips of Thomasville, NC; brother-in-law Clifton and wife Eula Brown of Huntersville, NC; brother-in-law Howard Brown and wife Eleanor Brown of Lombard, IL and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 19, 2008, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan Mitchell and Dr. J.C. Grose officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
