Canary Jane Moody Greene, age 100 years and six months, of the Westmoore Community in Moore County, and, for the past nine years, a resident of Clapp's Convalescent Home in Asheboro, NC, went to her home in heaven on Sunday evening, March 2, 2014. Toward the end of her days here, she happily anticipated seeing her Lord, her dear husband, Lacy, her daughter, her father, mother, brother and others who had preceded her.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC, with Rev. James Cockram and Rev. Connie Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 705, Seagrove, NC. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m., preceding the service.
Canary was born in Moore County on July 6, 1913, to the late Henry Frank and Rebecca Dunlap Moody and was married to Lacy Otto Greene in the parsonage of Green Street Baptist Church in High Point, NC, on April 23, 1932. She attended Moody School and Elise Academy in what is now Robbins, NC, and worked in the textile industry until her retirement in the late 1980's.
As previously indicated, she was preceded in death in 1990 by her beloved husband of 58 years, Lacy O. Greene, and in 1939 by their 4-year-old daughter, Shirley Inez Greene, and by her parents, Frank and Becky Moody, and an infant brother, Leo Moody.
She was a loving daughter, devoted wife, mother and grandparent and was devoted to her Savior and to the churches she attended where His word was shared. She loved growing flowers and was a talented seamstress and craftsperson. In her retirement, her hand sewn craft creations were sought after by many, the most well known of which were her rabbit dolls.
Canary grew up in a Moore County traditional pottery family and community, helping in her own father's shop until she became an adult. In her eighties, she created small clay turtles after her failing eyesight no longer permitted her to sew fine stitches. Friends and acquaintances remember her for her dedicated ministry writing cards of encouragement to mark all sorts of occasions, or simply just to express remembrance and prayer.
Even during her final days, she shared anecdotes and memories of events as recent as the past year, and as far back as sometimes humorous events from her childhood. Though confined to bed and chair in her room at Clapp's for years, she seldom complained to family or friends, always said "thank you" for small aids and favors, and smiled with happiness when family or visitors came. Her church friends, both from her home church and First Presbyterian in Asheboro, were treasured.
She is survived by daughters, La Vaughn Greene Lewis (Ray) of Asheboro, North Carolina; Teresa Greene Simmons (Randy Duke) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; grandchildren Pamela Ann Lewis (Henry Clay) of New York; Derinda Rebecca Lewis of Florida, Bart Ray Lewis (Allison), of Burlington, NC; Anthony Cole Simmons (Jamie); Mindi Simmons Hudson (Matt), of Chattanooga, Tennessee; great-grandchildren Macy Alexandra Lewis, Seth Bartram Lewis, Anthony Logan Simmons and Ava Grace Simmons.
Deep appreciation is expressed by Canary's family to the staff and exceptionally caring nurses of Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home's 200 Hall, and especially to Dr. Sopala for his several years of wise and compassionate care, to Dr. Kaur, her former physician, as well as to her numerous Moore County, Needham's Grove and other church friends and neighbors, and to those from Asheboro's First Presbyterian who have sent cards, visited her, taken the sacrament of communion to her, and who have been supportive of her family in ways too numerous to mention.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Needham's Grove Baptist Church, 359 Needham's Grove Road, Seagrove, NC 27341; to Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Union Grove Church Road, Seagrove, NC 27341; or to First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, Walker Avenue, Asheboro, NC.
