Herbert Calvin Brower of Asheboro went into the loving arms of his Savior on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. On December 31, 1930, Calvin was born to Numa and Zelma Poe Brower of Liberty, North Carolina. He was the brother to Dorothy B. Butler, Aline B. Loman, and Hilda B. Jones also of Liberty. He graduated from Liberty High School as his Class President in 1949. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954.
After graduating from Chicago Technical College, he worked for General Electric/Black and Decker of Asheboro as a designer draftsman for 38 years. He was one of the first instructors of Drafting at Randolph Technical Institute (RCC).
Calvin married the love of his life, who survives him, Rebecca Ann Gaster, on December 31, 1954. During their 61 years of marriage, they welcomed three children into their lives-Leesa, Cindy, and Craig Brower.
Additional survivors include: daughters Leesa B. Ferguson (Bob) of Archdale, NC, Cindy B. Mabe (David) of Asheboro, NC, and son Craig C. Brower of Huntsville, Alabama. They were blessed with seven grandchildren-Jennifer, Rachel F. Vanhart (Zach), Benjamin, and Patrick Ferguson, David J. and Alex Mabe, Dylan T. Brower, as well as one great grandson, Jayden Mabe. He is also survived by his sister, Aline Loman of Liberty, NC.
Service was important to Calvin, whether for his country, church, or community. In his lifetime, he was a member of the Liberty Lion's Club serving as their President and honored as Lion of the Year in 1962, served on the Board of Directors and volunteered for the CUOC, was a founding member of the Randolph Arts Guild serving as its second President, and served on various committees for the Randolph Baptist Association. Calvin taught Sunday School for a total of 60 years. At his current church Oakhurst Baptist, he was a beloved teacher and a deacon.
Calvin enjoyed many activities including oil painting, wood carving, reading, and golf. His greatest love and joys were serving God, loving his family, and being "Papa" to his grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 11, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro.
Funeral services will be held at Oakhurst Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2016. Dr. Keith Hudson and Dr. Richard Crider will be officiating. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, NC.
