Bobby Gene Spencer, age 84, of Asheboro passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Mr. Spencer was born in Randolph County on January 6, 1933 to Marvin J. and Lucy Jane Bullins Spencer. Bobby served his country for 4 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He served 7 tours of duty overseas with his favorite places being Scotland, the Mediterranean, and Iceland. He was also a member of the National Guard for 2 years. Bobby was formerly employed as a Machine Technician with Acme-McCrary Corporation. He graduated from Randolph Community College with an Automotive Mechanic degree in 1964. Before he had health issues, Bobby was working on a degree in Business Administration. He was a lifetime member of Flag Springs United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and on several committees, including the building committee for the new sanctuary. Bobby enjoyed learning the computer from his sons and grandson. He thought the world began and ended with his grandchildren and looked forward to the new pictures daily of his great grandson. Bobby loved the Tarheels, telling jokes, his cows, and woodworking. Bobby always had an upbeat and positive attitude with a smile. He loved everyone and worked to help his neighbors. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Foster, Pauline Rich, Iris Robbins, and Maudie Goins. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ola Hunt Spencer; sons, Rick Spencer and wife Clarissa of Asheboro and Greg Alan Spencer of Murphy; granddaughter, Erica Spencer of Washington, DC; grandson, Austin Spencer and wife Samantha of Chicago, IL; great grandson, Arthur Max Spencer of Chicago, IL; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 1:30-3:00 pm in the Flag Springs United Methodist Church Christian Life Center, 5852 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro and other times at the home of Rick and Clarissa Spencer, 651 Karla Dr., Asheboro. Funeral services will follow on Saturday at 3:00 pm at Flag Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Hunter, Rev. Barry L. Queen, and Dr. Billy Jarrett officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family would like to express a special thanks to his caregivers Bill and Sue Spencer, Bonita Campbell, and Betty and Donnie Copple for their care and concern and always being there to help. Memorials may be made to Flag Springs United Methodist Church, 5852 Zoo Parkway Sound System Fund, Asheboro, NC 27205. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the Spencer family.
