Billy Grey Smith, age 85, of Troy died Friday, September 6, 2013 at Autumn Care Nursing & Rehabilitation, Biscoe, NC.
Bill was born February 1, 1928 at Stanly County, NC but lived the majority of his life in Troy. He is the son of Carmie Vick and Bernice Saunders Smith. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church and First Wesleyan Men. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Bill was a retired employee with 29 years of service from First Bank. He was a 25 year volunteer fireman with the Troy Fire Department and a former member of the US Army Reserves. Bill was a very witty, sharp dresser and an avid fisherman. He loved gardening with his 1950 yellow Minneapolis Moline tractor. He also enjoyed playing tennis barefoot on clay courts and his finds and deals at yard sales.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years: Billie Morris Smith of the home; one daughter: Karen Smith Haywood and husband, Joey of Asheboro; one son: Gary Smith and wife, Jane of Troy; four grandchildren: Greg Smith, Jenna Smith, Clay Haywood and fiancé Kendi Barnhill, and Caleb Haywood; two sisters: Marceline Nelson of Troy, Marie Donathan of Wadesboro; two brothers: Leonard Smith and Gerald Smith, both of Troy.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 6 pm - 8 pm at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, 211 North Main Street, Troy; other times at the home. The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 am at First Wesleyan Church, 1368 NC Highway 134 North, Troy with Rev. Brian Wardlaw officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
