Turner Balsley "Bill" McCollum, Jr. was born on March 30, 1922 in Reidsville, NC and died on July 1, 2012. He is predeceased by his parents Turner Balsley McCollum, Sr. and Berta Carroll McCollum, as well as his sister Nancy McCollum Lambeth.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave., Asheboro with Rev. Carol Smith Dyson officiating and with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Pugh Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Bill graduated from Reidsville High School in 1941. He entered the United States Navy and served as Machinist Mate, 3rd class for the 1051st Seabee battalion in the South Pacific during World War II from 1944-1946. He married Hazel Craddock McCollum in 1948. They moved to Asheboro in 1953 with their three children. Bill was employed by A&P grocery stores from 1948-1977, serving as manager for more than 25 years.
He and his wife Hazel are devoted members of Asheboro United Church of Christ where Bill taught Sunday school and served as Deacon and Chairman of Ushers. Bill was also a member of the American Legion.
He loved to make others smile. He brought laughter to family and friends and also to people he encountered for just a few brief minutes. Bill made everyone's day brighter.
He is survived by his loving wife Hazel Craddock McCollum; son Turner "Billy" McCollum and his daughters Frances and Tessa McCollum of Kensington, MD; son Warren McCollum and his wife Kitty McCaskill McCollum of Hillsborough, NC and their daughter Lindsay McCollum of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter Tabby McCollum Jones and her husband Ron Jones of Jamestown, NC and their daughter Lori Jones Muse and her husband Will Muse of Jamestown, NC.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to friends and neighbors who have given their love and support in the last weeks and months.
