ASHEBORO - Baxter Talmadge Phillips, age 87, of Asheboro died Saturday, July 13, 2013 at his home.
Mr. Phillips was born January 13, 1926 the son of Bennie and Martha Johnson Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was a native of Moore County and was a veteran of the US Navy serving in WWII. He was a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church for 44 years where he served as a deacon. Talmadge was a huge advocate for Fayetteville Street Christian School and served on the Board of Directors. He was a very precise man who loved bird hunting, especially quail, fishing, an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed owning and training his hunting dogs. Talmadge was owner of Phillips Brothers Country Ham and was their first employee on January 13, 1947. In the 1960's he also sold appliances from Phillips Brothers. Mr. Phillips was a supporter of Men's Softball Teams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Talmadge was a supportive loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 69 years: Margaret Phillips; daughter and her husband: Dianne and Larry Craven of Asheboro, grandson and his wife: Phillip and Angela Craven of Denton; sister: Dee Warren of Southern Pines; sister in law and her husband: Doris and Kenneth Sheppard of Glendon; sister in laws: Helen Phillips and Virginia Phillips both of Glendon; brother in law and his wife:, Ed and Mary Phillips of Glendon.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC and other times at his home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, 901 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Pastor Jack Phillips, Pastor Adrian Pugh, Rev. Bruce Dickerson and Rev. Bud Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
