Baxter Ernest Kearns, age 91, of 500 Mountain Top Dr., Asheboro died Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Holder and Rev. Susan Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Shepherd United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.Mr. Kearns was a native of Randolph County and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII where he was a medic and received the Bronze Star Medal. He attended Wake Forest University where he was a member of the football team. He was retired from Harrelson Rubber Company and Kearns Furniture. He was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the NC State Fireman Association. Baxter was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Wright Kearns.He is survived by his sisters, Mozelle Rafferty of Raleigh, NC, Jewell Coffey of Kannapolis, NC, Doris Frost of Louisville, KY; nieces, Bonnie Chandler York of Asheboro, NC, Susan Chandler Garkalns of Asheboro, NC, Mary Jane Brown of Asheboro, NC, Patty Rafferty Collins of Jacksonville, NC, Kathy Rafferty McGehee of Raleigh, NC and Judy Coffey McIntosh of Laurens, SC, Jacqueline Marie Frost of Louisville, KY; nephews, Rick Coffey of Kannapolis, NC, Edwin Coffey of Kannapolis, NC, Bill Chandler of Richmond, VA and Mike Rafferty of Richmond, VA.The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 12, 2009 from 1:00-1:45 P.M. at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC and other times at the home of Richard and Susan Garkalns, 1506 Old Lexington Rd., Asheboro.Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 224 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, NC 27203.
