Alvas Phillip Smoot (Sr), 97, passed away on Wednesday, March 13 at his home in Asheboro NC.
Alvas was born in Guilford County on March 2, 1922. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Welborn Smoot and Frances Katherine Smoot, his older brother, Gaston Smoot, and his younger sister, Evelyn McKeel.
He is survived by his younger brother, Wilbur Smoot, two sons, Phil Smoot, George Smoot and his wife, Anne, grandson Dalton Phillip Smoot and granddaughter Sarah Alaine Smoot.
Beginning in 1943, Alvas served in the Army of the United States and participated in the Battles and Campaign in the Rhineland and the Ardennes. He held the rank of Staff Sergeant, received the American Theater Service Medal, the EAME Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, he was stationed for several months in Germany until being Honorably Discharged in March of 1946.
Following his military service, Alvas began a career with Burlington Industries and continued for 38 years. His hobbies and interests included golf, volleyball, coaching, and playing with any neighborhood child and friend who wanted his time. He loved playing many games and was an active volunteer at the Asheboro YMCA.
Alvas celebration of life visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue in Asheboro. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Asheboro Friends Meeting, 230 E. Kivett Street in Asheboro with Pastoral Minister Frank Massey officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memorial Park with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
