Addison Pierce "Add" Penfield, age 91, of 450 Mountain Top Dr., Apt. 205, Asheboro died Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home. Mr. Penfield was a native of Meriden, Connecticut, was a 1940 graduate of Duke University, and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was the voice of the Duke Blue Devils from 1938 to 1976 and was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He had served as Chairman of the Asheboro Housing Authority for twenty years, was a Marketing Specialist for the Regional Consolidated Services (RSC) in Asheboro, and was the founder and coordinator of the Ad Penfield/ RCS Golf Classic (now in its 18th year). He was a recipient of the State of North Carolina's Order of the Long Leaf Pine and Citizen of the Year in Asheboro in 2001. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Asheboro, past member of the Asheboro Kiwanis Club and the Golden K Club. He is survived by one son: Addison Penfield, Jr. of Greenwood, SC, son and his wife, Cameron W. and Cindy Penfield of Charlotte, NC; daughter and her husband, Nancy P. and Conrad Wease of Huntersville, NC; daughter and her husband, Sandy P. and Billy Suggs of Rocky Mount, NC; granddaughter, Wendy Penfield of Raleigh, NC; grandson and his wife, Chuck and Jennifer Penfield of Cary, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Jennifer and David Blamy of Charlotte, NC; grandson and his wife , Christopher and Stacey Wease of Wadesboro, NC; granddaughter, Amy Wease of Concord, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Matt LaFon of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Lindsey Suggs of Wilmington, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Virginia and Clark Harris of Atlanta, GA and 12 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be Monday, May 2nd at 11:00 AM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro with The Rev. Barbara J. Cooke, Rector and Father George Greer officiating. Inurnment with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in the church's columbarium. The family will receive friends Monday following the service in the church parish hall at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro, NC. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Parish Nurse Fund, 505 Mountain Road, Asheboro, NC 27205.
