Betty Ann Turner Gheen died peacefully April 1, 2017, at Clapp's Nursing Home in Asheboro, North Carolina. She was born November 22, 1925, in Leesburg, Virginia, the daughter of William H. and Annie Crim Turner. After graduating from Leesburg High School, she worked at the Department of Agriculture in Washington DC until the end of World War II when she married Ralph H. Gheen, the love of her life, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by three children: Barbara Gheen Pearson of Asheboro, NC; James Ralph Gheen of Cary, NC; and Linda Kay Gheen, of Stevens City, VA. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Matt, Chris, Jimmy, Mary, Emily, Meg, and Abby; five great grandchildren: Brooke, Walker, Maxwell, River, and Theo; and many nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.
Betty was a life-long member of Leesburg United Methodist Church, and a member of Central United Methodist Church in Asheboro. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, as well as an accomplished quilter. In later years, she picked up her guitar and began singing and playing the "old songs," bringing joy to her many friends at Cross Road Retirement Community and other nursing homes and churches in Asheboro. She continued to sing her way home at Clapp's where she was well cared for by a kind, loving and competent staff.
