|  Rev. Avery Hershel Smith, age 84, of 3904 Hardin Ellison Rd., Franklinville died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at Randolph Hospital, Asheboro. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Randolph Memorial Park with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Rev. Smith was a native of High Point and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was retired from K-Mart and was a member of American Legion Post 81. He pastored at several churches in North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida and was the founder and current pastor of Shadow of the Cross Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Altha Scott Smith, daughters, Linda Scott of Albuquerque, NM, Altha Carr of Franklinville, NC; sons, David Smith of Union, SC, Roger Lynn Smith of Trinity, FL, Charles Sarka of Seminole, FL, John Sarka of Largo, FL, Roger Dale Sarka of Hudson, FL; 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 13, 2009 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC.
